Fear & the Media
The interaction between culture and our collective fears
Have you ever watched a movie or news report and suddenly started to fear something you’d never given much thought to before? If so, you’ve seen that fear can spread. Throughout history, large sections of society have come to share certain fears, creating a level of concern far out of proportion with the actual threat. Sociologists call such fears “moral panics.”
